Kate's Current Favorites

Hi all! Kate here with some favorite things to start off your month.

The Psychopath Test

Like a psychopath, I opened this book from the middle and started reading to the end - then went back to the beginning, because The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson, author of The Men Who Stare at Goats, is a fascinating read about the inner workings of the psychopathic mind.

After learning about the psychopath checklist, a list of traits used to describe psychopathic behavior (including items such as ‘Grandiose sense of self-worth,’ ‘Glibness/superficial charm,’ ‘Pathological lying,’ and ‘Lack of remorse or guilt’), Ronson seeks out and interviews potential psychopaths. These include the organizer of a mass-murdering Haitian paramilitary group sequestered away in a correctional facility in upstate New York, and a former CEO who delighted in firing people living in a mansion filled with predatory animal sculptures. The results are terrifying but elucidating.

The Lunar Sheep

Devin Ashleigh, aka The Lunar Sheep on Etsy, creates needle felted art pieces with mystical themes. Expect to see mushrooms, plants, crystals, and many bright and whimsical colors. Look at how relaxed that little mushroom is! I want one of these so that maybe the mushroom can transfer his cute and calm spirit to me.

In addition to adorable shroomie friends, The Lunar Sheep creates felted wall art, succulents, and dryer balls, as well as jewelry and tapestries. Her Facebook page is linked here.

My Favorite Tea Recipe

My favorite sage tea recipe is fresh and soothing. Make a cup of hot water and add the following:

  • Fresh sage

  • Lemon juice

  • Honey

  • An herbal or green tea bag

I like to use the Blackberry Sage Black Tea or Double Green Matcha Tea from The Republic of Tea.

Music Mindfulness

It’s always good to stretch our mindfulness muscles, so here’s an activity for the day.

Turn on a song that you love and try to listen mindfully by focusing your attention on the song and tuning out everything else. Pay attention to the emotions you feel as the melody changes. As you listen or afterwards, note your favorite lyrics and the emotions they make you feel. If you want to take it a step further, turn those lyrics into art: draw out the concepts associated with your favorite lyrics and how they make you feel.

Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds is a game available on Steam. Named Game of the Year 2019 by multiple sources, it’s such a unique explorative game that I was advised not to read any spoilers ahead of time, so don’t worry, I won’t give away any secrets. That said, I’ll give you some general info: expect to explore multiple beautifully designed planets while uncovering a mystery that may have implications for the fate of the solar system.
